Helen Vardon Confession Annotated edition by R Austin Freeman Mystery Thriller Suspense eBooks
Much of this book feels like a Victorian novel recounting the harrowing experiences of beautiful young Helen Vardon. First she's tricked into a secret marriage with an unattractive older man, Lewis Otway. Then her father dies of "heart failure" in the midst of a violent confrontation with Mr. Otway. Helen refuses to live with her husband-in-name-only, bravely going off to earn her own living. That's just the beginning of her melodramatic adventures...But this novel was published in 1922. It's not Victorian, despite its vintage flavor. There are mind games going on that make Helen Vardon's Confession a precursor of modern psychological thrillers.
As for Helen, she's no old-fashioned girl, although she has principles. Her mind is sharp and logical, trained by an intelligent lawyer father. And she's skilled at decorative metalwork, having collaborated with her father in his hobby workshop. The only skill she lacks is self-defense. But who would ever imagine the plot that's brewing against her?
The novel is rich in period detail: walks through London neighborhoods; a scene at a séance; glimpses inside a very British club for collectors; and characters deeply involved in the new Arts & Crafts Movement.
Unfortunately there are some Jewish stereotypes. We who read the fiction of less enlightened eras are bound to encounter repellant prejudices occasionally. But Freeman almost redeems himself by making Mr. Otway, who is Jewish, quite a complex character. Although he starts out a villain, poor Otway has his trials too and becomes somewhat sympathetic.
Dr. Thorndyke, the great medical-legal expert, appears somewhat sporadically. But his brilliant forensics ultimately elucidate two very suspicious deaths.
Helen Vardon's Confession is not like other Dr. Thorndyke mysteries, but I enjoyed watching Freeman experiment with something different. I was completely captivated by the story, which has romantic as well as criminal and judicial elements - and is so revealing of post-Edwardian society. The Resurrected Press edition is well produced and has an excellent little introduction.

Helen Vardon Confession Annotated edition by R Austin Freeman Mystery Thriller Suspense eBooks Reviews
Dr. Thorndyke is nearly a cameo character in this rather melodramatic Thorndyke novel, which is full of slimy Jewish characters and touches on hypnotism and the power of suggestion. The narrator is a much-wronged woman who nevertheless is not particularly sympathetic, and the deliberate pacing of the story does not work as well here as in other Freeman novels. As usual, the love story is not particularly compelling. My least favorite Thorndyke so far.
I did not like this story as well as other Thorndykes.
For one thing, Thorndyke was not as prominent as he ususally is. Then I felt no sympathy for the characters. The question of Mrs Otway looking forward to the death of her husband and the guilt she felt were just too dark for me.
And although the there was a secondary romance it just did not lighten the story enough.
Mr. Freeman wrote the best mystery novels that I have read. My main goal after work was to dive back into the book to see the next development.
I feel fortunate to have run across these novels, due to !
I have enjoyed the Dr. Thorn dime books. In contrast to most mysteries, the solution is presented early on, and the story is about how and why.
